Zipadee-Zip Transition: When to Stop and What to Use Next

The Zipadee-Zip, with its star-shaped "wings," gives babies a cozy, gentle resistance that many find calming. Families often keep it well past the swaddle stage. At some point, though, your little one outgrows it. They may be walking, climbing, or just getting too big.

Signs it's time

  • Your child is near the size limit.
  • Your child is pulling to stand, walking, or trying to climb in it.
  • You're getting ready to move to a toddler bed.
  • Your child seems too warm or is fighting being zipped in.

Option 1: Switch to a regular sleep sack

This is the easiest next step for babies and young toddlers still in a crib.

1. Start with naps in a regular sleep sack for a few days.

2. Move bedtime over next.

3. Keep the same bedtime routine, white noise, and lovey if your child is old enough for one. (The AAP recommends no soft objects in the crib before 12 months.)

Most children adjust within a week.

Option 2: Moving into a toddler bed

If your child is moving to a toddler bed at the same time, plan it in stages. Changing two things at once is harder.

  • Switch the sleepwear first. Get your child comfortable in a regular sleep sack or warm pajamas while still in the crib.
  • Then change beds. Wait at least a week, then move to the toddler bed.
  • Set clear, simple rules. A toddler clock that changes color in the morning can help your child know when it's okay to get up.

There's no rush to leave the crib. Many children do best staying in it until closer to age 3.

Common setbacks

  • "I want my Zip!" Toddlers may ask for it. Stay calm and offer a fun new sleep sack they help pick out.
  • Getting up again and again in a new bed. Calmly walk them back each time with as little talking as possible. Consistency wins.
  • Early rising. Check room darkness, and make sure bedtime isn't too late.

Safe sleep basics

Keep the sleep space safe for your child's age and anchor heavy furniture to the wall once your child is in a toddler bed.

FAQ

Is it bad to keep using the Zipadee-Zip? Not as long as your child is within the size limits and it's safe for their stage. Follow the manufacturer's guidance.

Should I take it away cold turkey? Many families do. A short "naps first" phase is gentler for sensitive sleepers.
